A second opinion on your fertility treatment.

Several attempts are behind you – and the pregnancy has not come? After unsuccessful IVF or ICSI treatments, a structured second opinion is often the most important next step: we review your entire history with fresh eyes, add targeted diagnostics of our own – and develop a plan with you that fits your situation.

"Unsuccessful IVF – what now?" Many couples ask themselves this question after a second or third attempt without a pregnancy. Some consider changing their clinic, others simply want an independent assessment before continuing. Both are entirely legitimate – and that is exactly what a second opinion is for.

One thing matters to us: a second opinion is not a judgement on your previous treatment. Many paths begun elsewhere are medically well founded. Our task is to use more than 40 years of experience and the full diagnostics of our institute to check whether there are still undiscovered causes or untapped possibilities – no matter where you have been treated so far.

Our second opinion

Three steps to a well-founded new assessment.

Complete review of your records

We go through your entire history systematically: all findings, stimulation protocols, laboratory and transfer reports from previous treatments. The decisive clues are often already in the existing records – they just have to be read in context.

Our own diagnostics incl. genetics

Where gaps remain, we add targeted examinations: hormone status and ultrasound in-house, plus our own genetics laboratory – from genetic work-up of the couple and preimplantation genetic testing to the investigation of recurrent miscarriages.

A new individual plan

The result is not a standard scheme but a plan for your situation: what do we change, what do we keep, what do we clarify first? And in all honesty: sometimes we also confirm the path you were already on – that, too, is a valuable outcome.

The difference

Genetics in-house – decisive after unsuccessful attempts.

Especially when several attempts have been unsuccessful or there have been recurrent miscarriages, the genetic perspective pays off: chromosome analyses of both partners, the examination of embryos as part of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT-A) and genetic work-up after miscarriages are an established part of our repertoire – analysed in our in-house genetics laboratory, Vienna's only genetics department at a fertility institute.

Add to this our research expertise: WIF performed the world's first microbiome sequencing from the uterus using nanopore sequencing. Short distances between physicians, IVF laboratory and genetics mean for you: findings that interlock – and a plan from a single source.

Well prepared

What to bring to your second opinion.

The more complete your records, the more concrete the consultation. Most helpful are:

  • Medical letters and findings from previous fertility treatments
  • Stimulation protocols of your previous IVF/ICSI cycles (medication, dosages, course)
  • Laboratory reports: number and maturity of the eggs retrieved, fertilisation rate, embryo development
  • Transfer reports and the outcome of each attempt
  • Hormone findings, semen analyses and, where available, genetic findings and surgical reports

You don't have everything at hand? No obstacle – you can request your records from your previous clinic, and we complete any missing examinations here. The first consultation with us lasts a full hour: enough time to truly understand your story.

Honesty is part of our second opinion

A good second opinion does not automatically mean doing everything differently. If your previous treatment was medically sound, we tell you so just as clearly as we point out new approaches where we see them. Either way you gain: a new path – or the certainty of being on the right one.

„Nachdem wir schon andere Institute ausprobiert hatten, sind wir beim Wif gelandet. Wir waren in besten Händen. Trotz Misserfolgen waren die Mitarbeiter immer sehr um uns bemüht und nach einigen Monaten stellte sich endlich ein Erfolg ein. Vielen Dank!“

FAQ

A second opinion on fertility treatment: your questions.

When does a second opinion on fertility treatment make sense?

Typical occasions are two or more unsuccessful IVF or ICSI attempts, recurrent miscarriages, a treatment plan that was never explained to you conclusively – or simply the feeling that you need an independent assessment before the next step. As a principle: a second opinion is legitimate at any time, even in the middle of ongoing treatment planning.

What exactly do you examine in a second opinion?

First we review all existing findings and protocols in context. Building on this, we add targeted diagnostics of our own – such as hormone status and ultrasound, a current semen analysis, and genetic work-up in our in-house genetics laboratory, from chromosome analysis of the couple to the investigation of recurrent miscarriages. What is sensible in your case is something we determine together.

Do I have to tell my current clinic about the second opinion?

No. You have the right to seek an independent medical opinion at any time, and you are entitled to copies of your findings and treatment records. Many couples obtain a second opinion without ending their ongoing care – what happens afterwards is entirely your decision.

Could the result also be that my previous path was right?

Yes – and that is not at all rare. If your previous treatment is well founded, we confirm it openly. Even then you take away something important: the certainty that nothing was overlooked, and often concrete pointers as to which additional diagnostics could still be sensible before the next attempt.

I would like to change my IVF clinic – how does that work?

More straightforwardly than many think: you request your records from your previous clinic and bring them to the first consultation – or send them to us in advance. We build on what has been achieved, repeat only what is medically necessary and draw up a new treatment plan. Whether and how frozen eggs, sperm samples or embryos can be transferred is something we clarify individually with you and your previous clinic.

What role does genetics play after unsuccessful attempts?

Often a central one: genetic causes are among the most frequent reasons why embryos do not implant or pregnancies end early. Chromosome analyses of both partners, preimplantation genetic testing and genetic work-up after miscarriages can bring clarity here – directly in our house, in Vienna's only genetics department at a fertility institute.

How do I start with a second opinion?

The easiest way is a first consultation: the in-depth first consultation lasts a full hour and includes the review of your history, counselling and initial examinations. If you would like to get to know us first without any obligation, join our free info evening – online or on site.
