Your wish for a child as a single woman.

You wish for a child – even without a partner at your side. You are not alone in this, and your wish deserves an honest answer: what the legal situation in Austria currently looks like, what you can concretely do today, and which paths are open to you – we tell you clearly and respectfully.

The legal situation

What currently applies in Austria – honestly.

The Austrian Reproductive Medicine Act (Fortpflanzungsmedizingesetz, FMedG) permits medically assisted reproduction only within a marriage, a registered partnership or a marriage-like cohabiting relationship. In concrete terms: single women may currently not be treated with donor sperm in Austria (as of 2026). This applies to every institute in the country – and there is nothing we can change about it, much as we would like to.

For female couples, incidentally, the law is different: two women in a marriage, registered partnership or cohabiting relationship can fulfil their wish for a child in Austria with donor sperm – more on our page fertility for same-sex couples. You will find the legal details under legal framework.

One thing matters to us: this legal situation says nothing about your wish – and it does not mean there is nothing you can do today. Quite the opposite.

Your options

What you can already do as a single woman.

Check your fertility now

A fertility work-up is possible for every woman – regardless of relationship status: AMH level and egg reserve, hormone status and ultrasound show you where you stand. Knowledge that makes every further decision easier.

Freeze your eggs

With a medical indication, egg freezing is already possible today. And Austria is opening up: following the decision of the Constitutional Court, social egg freezing will be permitted without a medical indication from 1 April 2027 – and you can seek advice on it right now.

Treatment abroad

In some European countries, single women may also be treated with donor sperm. Whether this path is an option for you is a very personal decision – a thorough work-up of your fertility with us is a good foundation for it.

Keep an eye on the law

Laws are not set in stone – the opening of social freezing shows that the legal framework keeps evolving. We follow every change closely and are happy to keep you up to date on what it means for your wish for a child.

Gaining time

Egg freezing: your eggs of today for your tomorrow.

Egg quality declines with age – frozen eggs, on the other hand, keep the quality of the moment they were retrieved. This is exactly why egg freezing is the most important option for many single women: it keeps the door open until life is ready – whether with a partner or, depending on the future legal situation, without one.

Currently, freezing eggs in Austria is possible with a medical indication, for example in cases of endometriosis or before cancer therapy. From 1 April 2027, following the ruling of the Constitutional Court, social egg freezing will also be permitted without a medical reason. Our department for (social) egg freezing advises you right now – so that you are ready to start in April 2027.

Speaking openly

Treatment abroad – viewed matter-of-factly.

Some single women from Austria choose treatment with donor sperm in a European country where this is also permitted for unpartnered women. That is legitimate – what matters is that you know the legal and medical framework of the respective country well and inform yourself from reliable sources.

What we can do for you: fully assess your fertility here in Vienna – from egg reserve and hormone status to the gynaecological examination. This way, every decision – whether to wait, to freeze your eggs, or to pursue a path abroad – rests on a solid medical foundation. And should the Austrian legal situation change, your findings are already on file with us.

Your first step is already possible today

The only thing you have to wait for is the legislator – not clarity about your body. A fertility work-up with AMH level, hormone status and ultrasound shows you how much time you have and which options are realistic. The first consultation lasts a full hour – time for your questions.

FAQ

Fertility as a single woman: your questions – answered honestly.

May I, as a single woman, undergo assisted reproduction with donor sperm in Austria?

No, currently not. The Reproductive Medicine Act (FMedG) permits medically assisted reproduction only within a marriage, a registered partnership or a marriage-like cohabiting relationship (as of 2026). This rule applies equally to all fertility institutes in Austria. You will find the details on our page legal framework.

Why may female couples be treated, but not single women?

The FMedG ties treatment to a couple relationship: since the 2015 amendment, two women in a marriage, registered partnership or cohabiting relationship can also be treated with donor sperm – single women, however, still do not fall under the law. Whether this distinction remains is for the legislator to decide; we follow the development closely.

Can I have my eggs frozen as a single woman?

With a medical indication – for example endometriosis, certain hormonal conditions or before cancer therapy – this is already possible today. Without a medical reason, social egg freezing will be permitted in Austria from 1 April 2027, following the ruling of the Constitutional Court. Advice on this is possible and sensible right now – all details on our page social freezing.

What can I already have checked today?

Your entire fertility: the AMH level as a measure of your egg reserve, the hormone status from our own hormone laboratory, and uterus and ovaries by ultrasound. This work-up is possible regardless of relationship status and shows you how urgent – or relaxed – your personal timeline is.

May I seek treatment with donor sperm abroad?

In some European countries, treatment of single women with donor sperm is permitted, and you are free to seek treatment there. In that case, inform yourself carefully about the legal framework of the respective country. You can have your medical starting position – egg reserve, hormone status, ultrasound – assessed with us in Vienna beforehand.

Will the legal situation in Austria change?

That cannot be predicted – but the legal situation is in motion: the opening of social egg freezing from April 2027 goes back to a ruling of the Constitutional Court and shows that the framework keeps evolving. We monitor every change closely and will gladly inform you as soon as new possibilities arise for single women.
