PICSI
What is PICSI, and how does it help?
During sperm selection with PICSI (physiological intracytoplasmic sperm injection), hyaluronic acid is used to separate mature from immature sperm. This method identifies high- quality sperm cells that can be used for the subsequent fertilization with ICSI.
How does it work?
The head of mature sperm contain a specific sensor (receptor) for hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan). Hyaluronan is a vital component of the membrane shell that surrounds the egg cell. Immature sperm do not have this receptor. Using PICSI and a microscope, mature sperm can be individually selected based on their appearance and ability to bind hyaluronic acid. This process takes place in a lab, and the sperm selected are subsequently used for fertilization with ICSI.
The advantage of PICSI
Studies have shown that sperm capable of binding to the hyaluronic acid have a very high probability of being free of DNA-damage. This method appears to increase fertilization rates.
